MLK Day | The Dream Of A King / by Hussein Abdullahi

Without a doubt Dr. Martin Luther King is one of the worlds most influential figures of our generation. His great contributions became largely recognized during the Civil rights moments; when African-Americans faced excessive forms of racial inequities. Dr.King became very significant to large African-American communities throughout the southern states. His prophetic messages helped identify the several barriers that African-American’s faced. Dr. King was apart of some iconic moments in African-American history. Some of these events include: The March On Washington, The Bus Boycott, and the infamous “ I Have a Dream Speech”. What made Dr.King’s speech so unique was the way in which, it addressed people from different ethnic backgrounds. This act has contributed to the advancement of African-American history, but also has eliminated some racial barriers in America. Although racism still exists in the world, we have made positive strides as a nation but still have ways to go. This year we will commemorate Dr.King by sharing his legacy with our communities.

Our lives begins to end the day we come silent about things that matter.

In the sports world racial inequalities is still prevalent. Due to the large representation of African-American athlete’s bigots have created a negative view against them. We’ve witness discrimination in the case of NFL star Colin Kaepernick. The former San Francisco 49ers QB took a knee to protest against police brutality. His stance signified the continual racial profiling against African-Americans. In this case the repercussion were severe for Kaepernick as he was suspended without pay. It’s still mind-boggling to know that Kaepernick was punished for taking a stand on what he believes in. In America citizens are entitled to their beliefs and values but unfortunately, African-American also seem to get the backlash when it comes to social justice issues. Of course Colin Kaepernick would love to play in the NFL, but his purpose is more meaningful then his career. I’ve noticed that great world leaders sacrifice their passions for the sake of others and what Colin Kaepernick did was an example of how great leaders make the world a better place. His acts have raised awareness across all societies. We’ve seen athlete’s like LeBron James, Serena Williams, Skylar Diggins, and Carmelo Anthony use their platforms to cultivate social impact for their audience, and with reference to Kaepernick he has signified the importance of social responsibility for all athletes.

I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of colour

It’s inspiring because of what he stood for, equality, freedom, justice. Everyone is the same person, no one is better than others. Whether your Black, White, Hispanic.

Martin Luther King Jr. has paved the way for great American leaders, as well as African-American figures across the globe. Who would of thought that his “ I Have A Dream Speech” would of catapulted into a defining moment for African-American history. Moreover, Dr. King’s mission was bigger than merging two cultures together, he aimed to advocate for freedom by any means necessary. He sacrificed his own life for the lives of others. Unfortunately, consequences for his actions included serving jail time, being attacked, and eventually assassinated at the Lorraine Hotel. Throughout history, we’ve witnessed great world leaders die for believing in equality, justice, and freedom. Martin Luther King legacy continues to inspire courage acts of kindness worldwide, and as an African-Canadian male I feel that it’s my responsibility to educate those who are unaware of Dr. King’s contributions made towards our world. On January 22th, 2019 the world will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. and show their appreciation for his lasting legacy. I hope to see our world leaders pay homage for those who’ve came before us.
